Companionship during anesthesia at Halle University Hospital - More security before surgery: Parents can accompany their child until they fall asleep

Parents Can Now Stay With Children Until They Fall Asleep Before Surgery

University Hospital Halle (Saale) has introduced a new programme allowing parents to remain with their children until they fall asleep before surgery. The initiative aims to reduce anxiety for young patients during anaesthetic induction. Hospital staff have reported that the presence of a trusted adult makes the process smoother and more comforting for children. The programme is available for all scheduled anaesthetic inductions in children and adolescents. If no medical or logistical issues arise, a nurse accompanies the child and one parent to the induction area. The accompanying adult receives protective hygiene gear and a briefing on the procedure before entering.

The final decision on whether a parent can stay rests with the anaesthesia team just before surgery. However, certain conditions—such as acute infections, fever, gastrointestinal problems, or emergency situations—may prevent parental accompaniment. Benjamin Schüler, head of anaesthesia, explained that having a loved one nearby can ease a child’s nerves during the journey to the operating room. Feedback from families has been largely positive. Many parents have noted that their children appear calmer and more at ease when allowed to stay with them until they fall asleep under anaesthesia.

The hospital’s new approach focuses on improving comfort for young patients during surgery preparation. Parents can now support their children until the moment they drift off, provided there are no medical concerns. The programme reflects ongoing efforts to make hospital experiences less stressful for children and their families.
