Veteran Recovers After Groundbreaking Hernia Surgery Following War Injuries

A 57-year-old veteran of the special military operation has undergone complex surgery at Primorsky Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1. The procedure addressed a large postoperative hernia with a 13 cm defect, caused by severe shrapnel wounds sustained during his service. Nearly a third of his abdominal organs had shifted outside the abdominal wall due to the injury. The veteran had previously endured five surgeries, which left extensive adhesions and tissue changes. These complications made the operation particularly challenging for the surgical team.

Surgeons performed a TAR (transversus abdominis release) reconstruction, a modern technique for restoring the anterior abdominal wall in complex cases. They successfully separated the adhesions and returned the organs to the abdominal cavity. Despite the complexity, the procedure went as planned.

The patient recovered rapidly under outpatient supervision. He was discharged home on the 12th day with no signs of complications. The veteran had been discharged from service due to health reasons after his injuries. The successful surgery and smooth recovery offer a positive outcome after a series of medical setbacks. The TAR technique proved effective in addressing his severe condition.
