Germany's domestic violence surge exposes holiday suffering for women

Domestic violence cases have risen sharply across Germany in 2024. Police recorded 265,276 incidents nationwide, with over 70% of victims being women. In Steinburg and Dithmarschen, cases increased by 8.8% to 507 reports this year. The Christmas season often sees a further spike in domestic abuse. Many women suffer in silence during the holidays, prioritising family harmony or fearing for their children’s well-being.

Frauen helfen Frauen offers support to those affected by sexualised violence, domestic abuse, and provides legal advice. The organisation helps women obtain court-issued protection orders, which can bar abusers from the home and prohibit contact. Violations of these orders carry legal consequences. Police can also issue temporary removal orders against abusive partners, lasting several days.

The counselling centre has branches in Marne, Heide, and Brunsbüttel. These remain open during regular hours, with adjusted schedules around the holidays to ensure help is available when needed most.
