Mexico's Welfare Card Delivers Historic Pensions to Millions of Women

Mexico has begun distributing pensions directly to millions of women through the Welfare Card. The move marks the first formal recognition of their lifelong contributions to family care and national development. Welfare Secretary Ariadna Montiel Reyes confirmed the milestone this week. The Women’s Welfare Pension program was set to launch next year for women aged 60 to 62. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo accelerated the timeline, allowing payments to start early. Since last October, all registered women aged 60 to 64 have received financial support.

The initiative has already reached three million beneficiaries. A total of 23.66 billion pesos has been earmarked for the program in 2025. Recipients now access funds directly, removing the need for intermediaries. The program ensures direct payments for eligible women. It acknowledges their unpaid labour and provides financial independence. The government plans to continue expanding access under the allocated budget.
