Touch is the first sense to develop in humans, becoming functional in the womb by eight weeks. It relies on a vast receptor system spread across the body, with varying densities in different areas. This complex system does far more than register physical contact—it shapes emotions, memory, and even survival. The somatosensory system is not a single sense but a network of distinct mechanoreceptors and neural pathways. Signals travel to the brain at high speeds, with some fibres transmitting information at up to 70 metres per second. These pathways serve different roles, from discriminating textures to processing social touch through the C-tactile afferent system, which connects to the insular cortex.

Positive touch triggers physiological changes, lowering cortisol levels through oxytocin release and the parasympathetic nervous system. This reduction in stress hormones enhances cognitive functions like working memory and reasoning. Oxytocin also dims social threat perception, fostering trust by acting on the amygdala.

The absence of touch can have devastating effects. Studies in the 20th century by René Spitz and Harry Harlow showed that touch deprivation in infants leads to severe developmental failure, weakened immunity, and even death. In adults, lack of touch correlates with higher rates of depression and anxiety, along with cognitive and physiological decline.

Touch also plays a role in learning and pain management. Handwriting by hand improves memory retention compared to typing, due to the motor effort and slower pace. Haptic learning, which involves physical manipulation, offers memory benefits over visual or verbal methods. Through the gate control theory, touch can block pain signals, reducing their transmission to the brain.

Self-touch, such as stroking one’s own arm, increases under stress and improves cognitive performance. These behaviours are linked to lower cortisol responses, reinforcing touch’s role in emotional regulation. Touch influences trust, pain perception, learning, and emotional health. Its effects extend to the immune and cardiovascular systems, demonstrating its fundamental role in human well-being. Research continues to uncover its wide-ranging impact on both body and mind.
