Davao Region's fertility rate plummets to historic low in 2025
The Davao Region has recorded a significant drop in fertility rates, with the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) falling to 1.6 children per woman in 2025. This figure is below both the national average of 1.7 and the replacement-level fertility rate of 2.1. The shift reflects broader changes in family planning and women's reproductive choices across the region. A large majority of currently married women in the Davao Region are actively using family planning. About 70.4% of women aged 15 to 49 rely on some form of contraception, with 58.2% opting for modern methods. Meanwhile, 6.3% have already undergone sterilisation, and 52.9% do not wish to have more children.
Despite this, 9.1% of married women in the same age group still report an unmet need for family planning. These trends highlight both progress and remaining gaps in reproductive health access. The decline in fertility rates is expected to bring economic benefits, including a reduced dependency burden and potential demographic dividend. The region’s changing fertility patterns underscore the importance of women’s decisions in education, employment, and family life. To fully capitalise on these demographic shifts, policymakers must prioritise investments in health, education, nutrition, women’s empowerment, and social protection. These steps will help sustain development and improve quality of life in the Davao Region.
