The study appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists have identified specific gut bacteria and enzymes that control how estrogen circulates in the body. Disruptions in these microbial communities can lead to excess estrogen, which is tied to breast and endometrial cancers. The research also notes that people in industrial societies and formula-fed babies show a higher ability to recycle discarded estrogen.
In a separate development, scientist Dalton Conley’s new book, The Social Genome, argues that genetics influence more than just physical traits like height or eye colour. According to the book, genes can also predict factors such as education level and future income.
Meanwhile, climate change is affecting health in another way. Experts estimate seasonal allergies are worsening, with an extra 19 days of high pollen counts each year. The study highlights the role of gut health in preventing hormone-related diseases. Pregnant women, however, remain underrepresented in drug trials, with 75 percent of studies over the past 15 years excluding them. This makes it difficult to determine safe and effective treatments for this group.
