Mumbai's New Cancer Navigators to Guide Patients Through Treatment

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a new initiative to support cancer patients across Mumbai. The programme will deploy 24 Cancer Patient Navigators, one in each of the city’s administrative wards. These professionals will assist patients from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up care. The navigators are part of the Patient Navigation in Oncology Care Programme, a joint effort by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and ECHO India under the Cancer Care Bharat initiative. They were already involved in BMC’s cancer screening efforts and have received specialised training through TMC’s programme.

Their role includes guiding patients through treatment options, explaining costs, and connecting them with government support schemes. They will also provide referrals, counselling, and ensure continuity of care. Dr. Daksha Shah, Executive Health Officer at BMC, confirmed their existing involvement in screening and their readiness for this expanded role.

Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of TMC, emphasised the need for innovative healthcare models due to India’s ageing population and increasing cancer cases. Dr. R.A. Badwe highlighted the trust between patients, navigators, and medical teams, describing navigators as a bridge between the two. The programme aims to improve cancer treatment access and promote equitable healthcare for all citizens. By using the ECHO model and dedicated navigators, it seeks to ensure patients receive timely and informed support. The initiative is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s cancer care infrastructure.
