King County faces deadly surge in drug-related fatalities since May

King County has seen a sharp rise in drug-related deaths in recent weeks. Since late May, the Medical Examiner’s Office has reported 37 fatalities linked to substance use. The cases span multiple cities, including Seattle, Kent, Seatac, and Auburn. The deaths occurred between April and June 2026. On April 10, Wanda Elaine Hembd, a 61-year-old woman from Kent, died from acute combined morphine, mitragynine, cyclobenzaprine, and bupropion intoxication. Less than two weeks later, on April 21, Emmanuel Ramirez, a 42-year-old man in Seatac, succumbed to a mix of mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, and several prescription drugs, including oxycodone and lorazepam.

June proved especially deadly. On June 4, David Lynn Winter, a 62-year-old Seattle resident, died from fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication. The following day, Michael Duane Stegemann, 53, passed away in Kent from the same combination. Daniel Vincent Smith, 37, was found dead in Seattle on June 7, also due to fentanyl and methamphetamine. That same day, Ralph Alexander Young, 64, died in Seattle from acute fentanyl intoxication alone.

The trend continued with Robert Joseph Lumpkin, 47, dying in Auburn on June 6 from a mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. On June 8, Kneejamaya Lovie-Lajoy Goldsmith, a 22-year-old woman, was lost to fentanyl in Seattle. The most recent case involved Samuel Lang Hiltenbrand, 28, who died outdoors in Seattle on June 10 from acute fentanyl intoxication. The total now stands at 37 confirmed drug-related deaths since May 26. Fentanyl appears in the majority of cases, often combined with other substances. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding each fatality.
