Wartburgkreis overhauls hospital services with bold new healthcare strategy

The Wartburgkreis district council has approved a new strategic plan for hospital services in the region. The decision was made on Tuesday and outlines a major restructuring of healthcare provision. The changes aim to secure long-term, accessible medical care for local residents. Under the plan, the district will take full ownership of St. Georg Hospital Eisenach from 1 July 2026. It will also continue to operate Bad Salzungen Hospital. Both sites will remain open as enhanced emergency care facilities, each keeping its emergency department.

The Wartburgkreis will be split into northern and southern regions for medical care. Each will have a specialist hospital at its core. The hospitals will coordinate specialisations, including certified centres for heart attacks, strokes, trauma, and cancer treatment.

The strategy integrates emergency services and strengthens links between outpatient and inpatient care. It also addresses specific needs, such as trauma surgery, expanded geriatric services, and the continuation of obstetric care.

As part of the approval, the council appointed new members to the supervisory boards of St. Georg Hospital Eisenach gGmbH and GFG. The new plan will reshape hospital services across the Wartburg region. It ensures both hospitals remain operational with defined roles and shared specialisations. The changes are set to improve coordination and sustainability in local healthcare delivery.
