Vietnam's women scientists push for market access at landmark conference
An international conference titled Women scientists towards the market took place in Hà Nội on Wednesday. The event was organised by the Viet Nam Association for Intellectual Women (VAFIW) and UN Women. It focused on helping female researchers turn their work into practical applications. Participants highlighted access to resources as the biggest obstacle for women in science. Many research projects led by women struggle to reach the commercial stage. Women currently make up 46 per cent of Viet Nam’s research and development workforce. However, their representation in patent grants, utility solutions, industrial designs, and plant varieties remains low, ranging from 13 to 20 per cent.
Only 25.5 per cent of principal investigators on science and technology projects are women. VAFIW chairwoman Lê Thị Hợp stressed the need for a stronger support system. She called for an ecosystem that links research, innovation, businesses, investors, and markets. The conference aimed to find ways to help female scientists bring their research to market. A more connected ecosystem could improve access to resources and commercial opportunities. Organisers hope this will increase the visibility and impact of women-led scientific work.
