Kangaroo Mother Care Reduces Postpartum Depression, Study Finds
A new study highlights the benefits of kangaroo mother care (KMC) for reducing postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. The research, led by Gujrathi et al., is the most comprehensive review on the topic to date. KMC involves prolonged skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn, offering both emotional and physical advantages. The meta-analysis revealed a clear link between structured KMC programmes and lower depression scores in mothers. This method not only eases PPD symptoms but also boosts oxytocin release, which has calming and antidepressant effects. Additionally, KMC supports breastfeeding, which is known to improve maternal mood independently.
Beyond mood regulation, KMC strengthens the bond between mother and infant. It also reduces maternal anxiety and enhances attachment. The study notes that KMC is both accessible and affordable, making it especially useful in low-resource settings.
Researchers suggest that KMC should be part of broader postpartum care plans. Individualised approaches may be necessary to maximise its effectiveness. Future studies will examine the long-term effects of KMC on maternal mental health and child development. The findings confirm that KMC significantly reduces depression scores in mothers. Its low cost and simplicity make it a practical solution for many healthcare systems. Further research will explore its lasting impact on families.
