Shymkent's Oncology Center Performs First Laparoscopic Whipple Surgery

Shymkent’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Center has carried out its first complex laparoscopic pancreatic surgery. The procedure, known as the Whipple operation, targets malignant tumours in the head of the pancreas. It marks a significant step in expanding advanced cancer treatment options for local patients. The surgery was performed using modern laparoscopic technology, a technique considered among the most advanced in oncology. Specialists from Astana’s National Scientific Medical Center provided support to introduce the method in Shymkent. Anuar Abdikarimov, an oncologist from Astana, also led demonstration surgeries during an educational masterclass to share expertise.

Talgat Kurmanov, director of the Shymkent center, highlighted the institution’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge cancer treatments. The center already performs over 300 high-tech procedures annually, including interventional techniques. Mastering this surgery allows residents to access complex care without leaving the region.

The minimally invasive approach brings clear benefits. Patients experience less postoperative pain, a lower risk of complications, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker recovery. Continuous collaboration between specialists across Kazakhstan helps refine and expand these techniques. The successful introduction of laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy in Shymkent strengthens local healthcare capabilities. Residents now have improved access to sophisticated cancer treatments.
