Five-Month-Old Undergoes Life-Saving Heart Surgery in Karaganda
A five-month-old child from Temirtau has undergone successful surgery for a severe congenital heart defect. The procedure took place at Karaganda’s Multidisciplinary Hospital No. 2. The child was diagnosed with an intermediate form of atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), complicated by pulmonary hypertension. The operation was critical for the child’s survival. It restored normal blood circulation, eased cardiac strain, and improved long-term prospects. The surgical team, led by Dmitry Gorbunov and Ganibek Akzhanov, heads of their respective paediatric cardiac surgery departments, performed the procedure.
The surgery involved a radical correction of the heart defect. Specialists repaired the atrial septal defect, sutured the ventricular septal defect, and reconstructed the mitral valve. The operation was carried out under concurrent pulmonary hypertension, demanding exceptional precision and careful monitoring.
The team included experts from the UMC Heart Center and Multidisciplinary Hospital No. 2. Early surgical intervention is the standard treatment for this condition. The successful procedure has stabilised the child’s condition. Normal blood flow has been restored, reducing strain on the heart. The intervention significantly improves the outlook for the young patient’s future health.
