Pioneering Professor Liona Poon reshapes pregnancy care with groundbreaking research

Professor Liona Poon, a leading figure in obstetrics and gynaecology, has been recognised for her groundbreaking work in pregnancy research. She recently received the Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship in 2026 for her contributions to multi-omic approaches in tackling pregnancy complications. Her achievements extend beyond research, as she also holds key roles in medical societies and industry partnerships. Professor Poon serves as a Professor (Clinical) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She is also the President-Elect of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG). Her research has had a tangible impact, with findings from the ASPRE trial leading to first-trimester screen-and-prevent protocols in Hong Kong’s public hospitals. The trial, which she co-led, showed that low-dose aspirin can reduce preterm preeclampsia by 62%.

In 2024, she founded PregnaSense Co. Limited to advance predictive biomarker research in pregnancy. The following year, she joined Sow Fertility as their Medical Advisor, bringing clinical expertise and research rigour to the company’s mission. Sow Fertility, which partners with corporates and insurers, offers comprehensive fertility benefit solutions. The company recently congratulated Professor Poon on being named one of JESSICA’s Most Successful Women 2026.
