Mumbai's BDBA Hospital Performs First Free Robotic Knee Replacements

BDBA Hospital in Kandivali has completed its first two free robotic total knee replacement surgeries. The procedures mark a significant milestone for the public healthcare facility in Mumbai. Both operations used advanced robotic technology at no cost to the patients. The hospital performed the surgeries on Nagamma Hirana and Nirmala Koli. Hirana, a 52-year-old woman, received a robotic total knee replacement on her right knee due to advanced arthritis and severe varus deformity. Koli underwent the same procedure on her left knee because of bilateral knee arthritis.

A team led by Dr Amit Dhond, Head of Orthopaedics, carried out the operations. Biorad Medisys (CUREXO) provided the CUVIS Robotic System free of charge for the procedures. Typically, such surgery in private hospitals costs around Rs 4 lakh, but BDBA Hospital offered both treatments without charge.

Robotic technology enhances precision in implant placement. It also reduces tissue damage, speeds up recovery, and improves long-term results for patients. The successful surgeries aim to position BDBA Hospital as a leader in advanced orthopaedic care within Mumbai’s public healthcare network. Dr Ajay Gupta, Medical Superintendent, reaffirmed the hospital’s dedication to upgrading services and adopting new medical technologies. The hospital also restated its commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to all sections of society.
