Cricket for a Cause: MND Patient Rallies Support Through Charity Matches

The MND Association is urging people to host cricket events this summer to raise funds for research and support. Nick Varley, a 58-year-old recently diagnosed with the disease, is leading the effort by recruiting amateur players to join the cause. Motor neurone disease (MND) attacks the nerves that control movement, speech, and breathing. It progresses rapidly, often affecting mobility, communication, and basic functions within months. Over 5,000 people in the UK currently live with MND, and six new cases are diagnosed every day. A third of those with the condition die within two years, and there is no known cure.

Nick Varley received his diagnosis in November 2024. His symptoms forced him to stop playing for his local cricket team. Now, he is encouraging others to take up the sport in charity matches to support the MND Association’s work. The campaign aims to boost awareness and funding for MND research. Cricket events will provide a way for communities to contribute while enjoying the game. The association hopes the initiative will make a tangible difference for those affected by the disease.
