Researchers at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University have developed a new bioink for 3D bioprinting. The innovation uses marine collagen to create skin-like structures. This breakthrough could improve medical treatments for skin damage. The bioink’s main ingredient is collagen extracted from the jellyfish Aurelia aurita. When mixed with sodium alginate, it forms a soft hydrogel that closely mimics living tissue. This material allows scientists to print skin-like layers using a 3D bioprinter.

Marine collagen offers advantages over traditional animal-based sources. It supports skin regeneration while carrying a lower risk of allergic reactions. Tests show the bioink can boost the growth and division of human skin cells by 40 to 50 percent. The patented bioink may speed up patient recovery after injuries or surgeries. It also reduces the chance of secondary infections during healing. Hospitals and clinics could soon adopt this technology for better wound care.
