Astral Systems lands £28M to fast-track fusion energy and medical isotopes

Astral Systems has secured fresh funding to accelerate its fusion energy and medical isotope projects. The company aims to have multiple reactors running at full capacity by the end of the year. Its goal is to bring medical isotopes to market by 2027. The latest investment round includes backing from Tees River, Daphni, Blast Club, Speedinvest, and Playfair Capital. This brings the total funding for Astral Systems to over £28 million. The company will use the funds to expand production of its modular reactors and advance fusion research.

Founded by Talmon Firestone and Dr. Tom Wallace-Smith, Astral Systems currently employs 23 people. Its proprietary multi-state fusion (MSF) technology enables more efficient and cost-effective reactor operations. The funding will also support the development of medical isotopes, addressing a growing demand driven by an aging population and rising cancer cases.

Astral Systems has already generated over £3 million in revenue. It is working on projects to produce radioisotopes and advanced nuclear fuels. The company’s mission is to become a global leader in fusion energy, from supplying radiotherapeutics to exploring clean hybrid power sources. The new funding will help Astral Systems scale its reactor technology and meet its 2027 target for medical isotope production. The company is positioned to play a key role in both fusion energy and healthcare. Demand for radioisotopes continues to grow, with over 50 million procedures relying on them each year.
