New Documentary Sister Senators Spotlights Bipartisan Fight for Women's Rights

A new documentary titled Sister Senators is in production. It follows five women in the South Carolina State Senate as they advocate for women's rights. The project has already drawn high-profile support, with Julianna Margulies signing on as an executive producer. The film centres on Republican senators Katrina Shealy, Sandy Senn, and Penry Gustafson, Democrat Margie Bright Matthews, and Independent Mia McLeod. Together, they gained international attention after blocking a near-total abortion ban in South Carolina. This move came as the state, like many others, reduced abortion access following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Robin Hessman, who executive produced the Oscar-winning documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin, is leading production. Julianna Margulies, a three-time Primetime Emmy winner for The Good Wife and ER, joined the project due to her interest in women’s rights and political cooperation. She previously executive produced the short documentary Jack and Sam.

Sister Senators is currently in early post-production. The film aims to serve as a blueprint for political collaboration across party lines. The documentary highlights the efforts of these five senators in a politically divided landscape. Their work on women’s rights has already made an impact in South Carolina. The film’s release is expected to draw further attention to their cause.
