German researchers have tested a new treatment for knee osteoarthritis using gelatin microspheres. The method aims to offer an alternative to current options like hyaluronic acid injections or joint replacement surgery. Early results suggest it could be a safe and effective solution for many patients. The clinical trial involved 194 patients with severe arthritis and ten others with chronic pain after joint replacement. Doctors injected gelatin microspheres into the knee to block abnormal blood vessel growth. These microspheres gradually dissolve, reducing inflammation and pain.

After a year, 80% of participants showed improved mobility. Pain levels dropped by an average of 47%. No serious side effects were reported, and most patients maintained their progress throughout the study. The treatment’s effects lasted at least a year for all participants. Researchers believe it could replace surgery for many with knee osteoarthritis. This development may provide a long-term solution for a condition affecting hundreds of millions globally.
