Engineers at MIT have created a tiny ingestible sensor to measure core body temperature. The device, shaped like a small blueberry, offers a new way to track internal temperature with precision. It is designed to help detect infections early, especially in vulnerable groups. The sensor measures just 6 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height. This makes it smaller than other ingestible temperature sensors, reducing the chance of blockages in the digestive tract. It sends continuous updates from the gastrointestinal tract, providing real-time data.

Giovanni Traverso, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT and a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, contributed to its development. Traditional methods, like oral or forehead readings, often fail to reflect true core temperature. The new sensor aims to solve this by measuring from within the body. The device could improve monitoring for at-risk populations, such as those with weakened immune systems. Early detection of infections may become more reliable with accurate core temperature readings. This could lead to quicker medical responses when needed.
