Three Anne Arundel County beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued health advisories for three local beaches. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor are currently unsafe for water contact. Routine testing revealed elevated levels of enterococci bacteria in the water. The latest test results, received on Wednesday, confirmed bacteria levels above safe limits for recreational activities. On Thursday, a specific advisory was issued for Carrollton Manor. The department warns against swimming, water skiing, or any direct contact with the water at these locations.

Enterococci bacteria can cause gastrointestinal problems if ingested, including diarrhoea or vomiting. People with open cuts or wounds are advised to stay out of natural bodies of water to avoid infection. The health advisory also recommends waiting at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before swimming in such areas.

Fishing and crabbing may still take place at the affected beaches, but precautions are necessary. The department advises wearing gloves and ensuring seafood is cooked thoroughly. Anyone who comes into contact with contaminated water should wash immediately with hot water and soap. The advisories remain in effect until further notice. Residents and visitors are urged to follow the health guidelines to prevent illness. The Department of Health will continue monitoring water quality and update the public as conditions change.
