Merrimack Health shuts Methuen maternity ward a month early

The labour and delivery unit at Merrimack Health Methuen Hospital will close earlier than planned. The shutdown begins on 29 June 2025, a month ahead of the original August date. Expectant mothers due in the coming weeks will need to adjust their birth plans. Lawrence General Hospital acquired Holy Family Hospital in 2024, forming Merrimack Health. The decision to close the Methuen maternity ward affects 24 obstetric beds, 28 well infant nursery bassinets and 10 special care nursery bassinets.

The Department of Public Health raised concerns about the closure. Merrimack Health must now demonstrate how the community will still receive sufficient care. The organisation states it is addressing these concerns and working with patients on new care arrangements.

From 29 June, patients in labour will be directed to Lawrence General Hospital. Those arriving with labour emergencies at Methuen may still be treated there but will be transferred to Lawrence if possible. Some nurses will move to new roles at Lawrence General, while others will leave their positions. The closure will reshape maternity services in the area. Patients due after 29 June must now plan to deliver at Lawrence General Hospital. Merrimack Health continues to coordinate with authorities and affected families to manage the transition.
