The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved bemotrizinol, a new sunscreen ingredient, after a 25-year wait. This marks the first time a sunscreen component has passed through the agency’s streamlined review process, introduced in 2020. The decision has been welcomed by health officials and industry experts alike. Bemotrizinol offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays without leaving a white residue on the skin. Unlike many existing sunscreens, it causes minimal irritation and is safe for adults and children over six months old. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy praised the approval, calling it a step forward for sunscreen innovation. David Andrews of the Environmental Working Group agreed, stating that the move would help modernise outdated U.S. sunscreen technology. Dr. Jon LaPook added that the ingredient’s durability under sun exposure sets it apart from existing products. The ingredient will first be sold under the brand name Parsol Shield by DSM Nutritional Products, with a launch planned for later this year. After an 18-month exclusivity period, other manufacturers will be able to use bemotrizinol in their own formulations.

The FDA’s approval of bemotrizinol introduces a long-awaited option for U.S. consumers seeking effective, non-greasy sun protection. Its broad-spectrum coverage and skin-friendly properties address gaps in the current market. The ingredient will initially be available exclusively through DSM Nutritional Products before wider industry adoption.
