Austria Battles Record Heatwave as Health Risks Surge and Events Press On

Austria is currently facing a severe heatwave, with parts of Burgenland under the highest heat alert level. Despite the extreme conditions, officials have confirmed that large-scale events will continue as planned, with safety measures in place. The ongoing heatwave has raised concerns about public health. Katharina Reich, Director-General for Public Health, has noted a clear rise in circulatory problems at her Vienna emergency clinic. She states that the increase in heat-related hospital admissions is evidence of growing health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Reich, who also works as a physician, rejects arguments downplaying climate change based on past hot summers. She points to consistent meteorological data showing long-term changes. Austria has already taken steps to address the issue, including the introduction of the Heat Protection Ordinance on 1 January.

Crisis and disaster management officials insist the country is prepared for major events even during extreme heat. They confirm that precautions are being enforced to ensure public safety. The heatwave has led to more hospital visits for circulatory issues and heat stress. Austria’s Heat Protection Ordinance marks an initial effort to adapt to rising temperatures.
