Honolulu's free e-waste recycling event offers secure data destruction on October 11

Hawaiian Electric is hosting a free e-waste recycling event on October 11 in Honolulu. Residents can drop off old computers, hard drives, and other electronics at the Ward Baseyard visitor parking lot. For those needing secure data destruction, additional paid services will also be available on-site through certified providers.

Separately, the University of Hawaii's Willed Body Program has paused new enrollments after reaching capacity in August 2023. The programme, which accepts anatomical donations for medical education, remains active for previously registered participants.

The e-waste event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at 820 Ward Ave. While general recycling is free, secure data destruction requires pre-registration and payment via eopala.com/register/. Pricing depends on the number of items needing destruction.

E-Opala Recycling Center, a NAID AAA-certified company, will oversee the data destruction process. Other certified providers on Oahu include **Access in Kapolei (808-673-3200)**, **Iron Mountain in Honolulu**, and **Shred-it (Stericycle)**, which serves the Honolulu area. Meanwhile, the Willed Body Program at the University of Hawaii medical school stopped accepting new donors on **August 22, 2023**, citing limited space. Existing participants should have received a **green donor identification card**. To verify enrollment, families can contact the programme at **808-692-1445** or **[email protected]**.

The October 11 event offers a convenient way to dispose of electronics, with optional secure destruction for sensitive data. Those needing certified hard drive or smartphone disposal can also reach out to local NAID AAA providers year-round. For the Willed Body Program, no new enrollments are being accepted, but current donors remain part of the initiative.
