Vienna's U2 subway welcomes Lina-Loos-Platz, a station honoring women's legacy

Vienna’s subway network is expanding with the opening of Lina-Loos-Platz, a new U2 station named in honour of the Austrian actress and writer. The station will welcome passengers from Monday, January 19, after remaining unused since its completion in 2013. It marks the third time a Vienna subway stop has been named after a woman. The station sits at the heart of a growing residential area, with over 8,000 future residents expected nearby. Two entrances provide access, each equipped with secure bike parking garages costing €1.50 for 24-hour storage. Above ground, plans include 1,800 square metres of green space and a water feature.

Lina Loos, the station’s namesake, was a prominent figure in women’s emancipation. Wiener Linien has committed to increasing female representation in station names, including potential future stops on the U5 line. The station’s roof hosts over 70 photovoltaic panels, generating renewable energy. With this addition, the U2 line now has 21 stations, bringing Vienna’s total subway count to 110.

The opening of Lina-Loos-Platz expands public transport options for thousands of residents. Its eco-friendly design and bike facilities reflect Vienna’s push for sustainable urban mobility. The station also highlights ongoing efforts to recognise women in the city’s infrastructure.
