Ukrainians lose faith in government and Western allies amid war's toll
Public trust in Ukrainian institutions has hit a new low, according to recent polling. The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) found that most citizens distrust the government, parliament, and courts. At the same time, confidence in Western allies has shifted, with a sharp drop in trust toward the US.
Amid ongoing war, Ukrainians remain firm on their terms for peace but show growing uncertainty about international support.
The latest KIIS survey reveals deep scepticism toward Ukrainian authorities. Only 24% of respondents trust the state apparatus, while 76% distrust the parliament. Similarly, 73% distrust the government, and 66% lack confidence in the courts. These figures highlight widespread dissatisfaction with domestic leadership.
Trust in foreign partners has also changed. While 49% of Ukrainians still trust the European Union, only 21% now trust the US—a significant decline. Trust in NATO has fallen as well, though not as sharply. Analysts suggest this shift reflects uncertainty over the US administration’s long-term commitment to Ukraine. Russian disinformation campaigns have seized on these trends. Propaganda efforts amplify claims that 'the West is tired of Ukraine,' using polling data to fuel division. Despite this, 61% of Ukrainians continue to trust President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though support for wartime elections remains low at just 9%. On the question of peace, 75% of Ukrainians oppose any deal that restricts their armed forces or forces troop withdrawals from Donbas. However, 72% would accept a conditional freeze of the conflict along current front lines. Meanwhile, 63% say they are prepared to endure the war indefinitely, even as Russian strikes target critical infrastructure.
The survey results show a population wary of both its own institutions and shifting international alliances. Ukrainians remain resolute in their rejection of unfavourable peace terms, even as they face prolonged conflict. The data also underscores the challenge of maintaining public morale amid external pressure and internal distrust.
