Teen beats leukemia and returns to baseball with a mission to help others

Victor Aponte, a 16-year-old from Berks County, Pennsylvania, has overcome leukemia to return to the baseball field. His journey began at six, when he first fell in love with the sport. Now, after a gruelling battle with illness, he is back playing—and determined to give back to those who supported him. Aponte’s life changed at 14. During a baseball tournament, he struggled to finish playing and was later diagnosed with leukemia. The news came as a shock, but his community quickly rallied around him.

Teammates and staff at Governor Mifflin High School organised fundraisers to help cover medical costs. Meanwhile, EL1 Reading, a local baseball training company, launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised $30,000 for his treatment. Throughout over a year of chemotherapy, Aponte lost his hair but never his determination. Now in remission, he has returned to the field. His goals extend beyond baseball—he plans to study nursing in college. By doing so, he hopes to support other children facing the same challenges he once did.

Aponte’s recovery marks a new chapter, both on and off the pitch. His community’s support helped him through treatment, and now he aims to repay that kindness. With college aspirations in nursing, he wants to turn his experience into a way to help others fighting similar battles.
