Russia Proposes 20% Insurance Discount for Women Drivers Over Safety Record
The National Automobile Union of Russia (NAU) has proposed a 20% discount on mandatory car insurance for women. The move aims to make driving more affordable and encourage female participation in professional transport roles. Officials point to safer driving records among women as a key reason for the suggestion.
NAU President Anton Shaparin highlighted that women are far less likely to cause serious accidents. Statistics show female drivers in Russia commit 18 times fewer traffic offences than men. This trend has led the union to argue for lower insurance costs.
The proposal comes after NAU data revealed insurers underpaid car owners by 27 billion rubles in 2025. However, the insurance industry has not yet responded to the suggested discount. Shaparin believes cheaper policies could attract more women to careers in driving, addressing labour shortages in the sector.
The discount remains a proposal for now, with no immediate confirmation from insurers. If approved, it would reduce costs for female drivers while recognising their lower risk profile. The NAU's push reflects broader efforts to improve fairness in insurance pricing.
