A 49-year-old woman in Vladivostok has survived a life-threatening rupture of a giant uterine fibroid. Doctors at Clinical Hospital No. 4 performed emergency surgery after she was admitted with severe abdominal pain and massive internal bleeding. The procedure required nearly 10 blood transfusions to save her life. The patient arrived at the hospital in critical condition, having lost over four litres of blood. The rupture came from a fibroid measuring roughly 20×30 cm and weighing more than 2 kg. Surgeons immediately identified the need for urgent intervention to stop the bleeding and remove the growth.
Zakhar Levin, head of the surgical department, led the operation. Yelena Fedorenko, head of gynecology at the region's third maternity hospital, also assisted in the complex procedure. Despite the severity of the case, the team managed to preserve the woman's hormonal function. This is not the first extreme case in Primorsky Krai. In recent years, at least two women—one aged 49 and another aged 60—underwent surgeries for giant fibroids. The latter had a 15 kg tumour removed at a large Vladivostok hospital.
After stabilising, the patient was moved to outpatient care and later discharged home. The successful surgery highlights the region's capacity to handle rare and high-risk gynecological cases. Her recovery will continue under medical supervision.
