Winter sunscreen confusion spikes as UK searches for SPF advice soar 320%

Confusion over winter sunscreen use is on the rise across the UK. Recent data shows a sharp increase in online searches for advice on SPF levels and application amounts. Despite growing awareness, many still underestimate the need for sun protection during colder months.

Over the past month, queries for 'what SPF to use' have jumped by 320%. Another 250% spike appeared in searches for 'how much sunscreen to use on face'. These figures highlight widespread uncertainty about winter sun safety.

Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Pharmacy stresses that UV radiation remains a risk all year, even on cloudy days. She advises applying sunscreen daily, regardless of the season. Yet around 60% of UK adults still don't know the correct amounts to use. Experts recommend specific measurements for full protection: two teaspoons for the face and neck, one teaspoon per arm, one per leg, and two each for the chest, stomach, back, and shoulders. Proper application also matters—shaking the bottle, using the three-finger rule for the face, and covering often-missed spots like ears and hands. The product should absorb for 15 minutes before going outside. While exact winter sunscreen usage in EU cities isn't tracked, general reports show steady growth in sales. This trend reflects rising awareness of skin cancer risks, though winter-specific habits remain poorly documented.

The surge in online searches suggests more people are questioning winter sun protection. Clear guidelines now exist for both SPF levels and application amounts. With UV exposure persisting year-round, consistent use could reduce long-term skin damage risks.
