Why Dermatitis Treatments Haven't Changed in Five Years—and What Still Works

Dermatitis, including eczema and contact dermatitis, remains one of the most widespread skin conditions, covering any inflammation of the skin. Despite its prevalence, no major updates in global treatment guidelines have emerged in the last five years.

Symptoms of dermatitis often involve redness and persistent itching. While treatments focus on reducing inflammation, some ingredients—like fragrances or retinoids—can worsen or even trigger flare-ups in sensitive individuals.

Moisturisers play a key role in managing the condition. The formulation—whether cream, lotion, or ointment—determines how quickly it absorbs and protects the skin. Occlusive ingredients, in particular, help restore the skin barrier and lock in moisture. For better results, experts suggest layering a thicker ointment over a lighter cream.

Most products designed for dermatitis target inflammation pathways, making them suitable for multiple forms of the condition. However, no significant changes in official treatment recommendations have been reported since 2021.

Management of dermatitis still relies on established practices, such as avoiding irritants and using barrier-repairing moisturisers like CERAVE. Without new guidelines, patients and clinicians continue following existing approaches. The focus remains on reducing inflammation and maintaining skin hydration through carefully chosen products.
