Wesel joins global protest against violence on February 14, 2026
Wesel will join the global One Billion Rising campaign on February 14, 2026, to protest violence against women and girls. The city's participation aligns with a nationwide effort, as over 100 German municipalities have taken part since the movement began in 2013. This year's slogan, #WomenOnFire – Ni Una Menos, calls for renewed passion and action in combating patriarchal violence.
The One Billion Rising campaign was founded by activist Eve Ensler to demand justice, gender equality, and empowerment for women worldwide. Its annual dance protests have grown into a powerful symbol of resistance, with Wesel and other local groups regularly participating.
Germany has seen a troubling rise in violence. In 2024, police recorded 265,942 victims—a 3.8% increase from the previous year. Women made up 73% of those affected. The campaign's urgency is clear, as cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne have hosted large-scale events in the past. Berlin's 2013 launch at Brandenburg Gate drew thousands, while Hamburg's 2018 flashmob attracted up to 5,000 participants. Cologne's 2020 protest saw 3,000 dancers before pandemic restrictions disrupted gatherings.
The Ni Una Menos movement, originating in Latin America, fights femicides and systemic gender-based violence. Wesel's Mayor Rainer Benien and Equal Opportunity Commissioner Regina Schmitz-Lenneps have encouraged women in distress to seek help. Support is available through the Violence Against Women Helpline at 116 016 or www.hilfetelefon.de.
The 2026 campaign in Wesel reflects a broader push for change, as cities across Germany continue to mobilise against domestic violence. With rising statistics and growing public engagement, the movement aims to turn awareness into concrete support for survivors. Local authorities and activists stress the importance of accessible resources and collective action.
