Wave Life Sciences stock crashes 50% after weak weight-loss drug results
Wave Life Sciences saw its stock price plummet by nearly 50% on Thursday, hitting a 52-week low. The sharp decline followed updated results from the company's INLIGHT trial for its experimental weight-loss drug, WVE-007, which analysts said fell short of expectations.
In December, Wave had reported promising early data from a single 240 mg dose of WVE-007. Participants experienced a 9.4% reduction in visceral fat, a 4.5% drop in total body fat, and a 3.2% increase in lean mass. These figures had raised hopes for the drug's potential in tackling obesity.
Thursday's update, however, revealed weaker outcomes for the higher 400 mg dose. While visceral fat still decreased by 5.0% compared to placebo, total fat fell by just 0.7%, and lean mass declined slightly by 0.2%. Analysts noted that the results lacked the same level of impact seen in earlier data. Wave executives explained that the 400 mg group began the trial with a healthier body composition than expected. This baseline difference may have limited the drug's observable effects. The company now anticipates stronger results in the upcoming Phase 2a multidose portion of the study, particularly in participants with higher BMI and weight-related conditions. A more comprehensive mid-stage trial is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2026. This study will provide a clearer assessment of WVE-007's effectiveness in treating obesity.
The latest data has cast doubt on WVE-007's near-term prospects, prompting a steep drop in Wave's share price. The company's next steps depend on the outcomes of the Phase 2a trial, which will focus on patients with greater metabolic needs. Investors and researchers will be watching closely for signs of improved performance in that study.
