Viersen District expands breastfeeding support with new nursing rooms and certification

Viersen District has taken new steps to support breastfeeding families. A dedicated room for nursing and changing has opened in the district's main building, while Schwalmtal has become the first certified 'Breastfeeding-Friendly Municipality' in the area. The moves aim to make daily life easier for parents and encourage wider acceptance of breastfeeding in public spaces.

The district council has set up a breastfeeding and baby-changing room on the ground floor of its administrative building (Room 0108). Accessible via the main entrance, the space includes a nursing chair, changing table, nappies, disposable pads, wet wipes, toys, and colouring supplies for children. Staff and visitors can use the facility by requesting access from reception.

Schwalmtal recently received official certification as a 'Breastfeeding-Friendly Municipality'. The recognition highlights the town's commitment to reducing barriers and increasing visibility for nursing parents. Gina Dohmen, from Viersen's Early Support Services, noted that breastfeeding benefits both mother and child, adding that the certification reinforces local support for families.

Over the coming year, the district will develop an online map showing all breastfeeding and changing facilities across the area. Businesses and public venues with suitable spaces can register by emailing [email protected]. A printed directory of baby-friendly locations will also be compiled to help parents find convenient spots while out and about.

The initiatives provide practical help for families while promoting breastfeeding as a normal part of daily life. With a new dedicated room, a growing directory of facilities, and Schwalmtal's certification, Viersen District is expanding support for parents across the region. The measures aim to ensure easier access to nursing and changing spaces in public and workplaces.
