Unlicensed beauty salons and tattoo studios spark health crisis in Türkiye

Health experts in Türkiye have issued warnings about the dangers of unlicensed beauty salons and tattoo studios. These unregulated businesses pose serious risks, including infections, allergic reactions, and long-term health complications. Specialists are urging the public to verify certifications before undergoing any procedures.

Professor Asli Tatliparmak from Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital highlighted the risks of procedures carried out by untrained staff. Bacterial and viral skin infections, tissue damage, and permanent scarring can result from poor hygiene and unsterilised equipment. She also warned of severe diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV when needles are reused or improperly handled.

Tattoo artist Ece Bas echoed these concerns, stressing that low-quality ink and incorrect application can trigger allergic reactions. Some clients may later need costly laser treatments or cover-up tattoos to fix the damage. Bas urged people to research artists and studios thoroughly before getting inked.

Sultan Kargun, a beauty specialist, pointed to the dangers of unapproved products in botox and filler injections. Without Ministry of Health approval, these substances can cause irreversible harm. Kargun advised customers to choose only licensed and certified salons to avoid complications.

Tatliparmak recommended checking health certifications, sterilisation practices, and official approval of materials. For those with allergies, she suggested patch tests before any procedure to prevent adverse reactions.

The warnings come as unregistered beauty and tattoo businesses continue operating without proper oversight. Experts stress that using unlicensed services can lead to severe, sometimes permanent, health issues. They advise the public to prioritise safety by selecting certified professionals and verified products.
