UnitedHealthcare slashes prior authorization hurdles for faster patient care
UnitedHealthcare has announced major changes to simplify prior authorization processes for healthcare providers. The company is cutting approval requirements and investing in digital tools to speed up decisions.
CEO Tim Noel stated that prior authorization should only be used when it genuinely protects patients and improves care quality. On April 20, 2026, UnitedHealthcare revealed plans to support rural healthcare communities. The insurer will accelerate payments and exempt many rural providers from prior authorization requirements. Four days later, the company backed an industry push to standardise electronic submission rules for prior authorizations.
Currently, only 2% of UnitedHealthcare’s medical services require prior approval. The insurer is now removing authorization requirements for 30% of services that previously needed them. By the end of 2026, another 30% of remaining authorizations will be eliminated.
The company is also expanding its national Gold Card program. This initiative rewards provider groups that follow evidence-based care guidelines. For authorizations that are still needed, around 92% are approved within 24 hours on average.
To further streamline the process, UnitedHealthcare is rolling out digital tools. These include electronic submission, real-time status tracking, and faster decision-making systems. The move follows a series of recent commitments to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. The changes will reduce administrative burdens for providers and speed up patient care. UnitedHealthcare’s digital upgrades and expanded Gold Card program aim to create a smoother, more efficient system. The company’s long-term goal is to limit prior authorization to cases where it directly benefits patient safety and treatment quality.
