U.S. abortion rates hold steady in 2025 as telehealth bridges access gaps

The number of abortions in the U.S. remained steady in 2025, matching figures from the previous year. Clinicians provided an estimated 1,126,000 procedures, while telehealth services continued to play a growing role. Legal battles over medication access and new state protections have also shaped the landscape. In 2023, mifepristone—a key abortion medication—became available by mail without requiring an in-person visit. This change allowed more people in states with restrictions to access care remotely. That year, around 91,000 patients in states with bans received telehealth abortions, reducing the need for cross-state travel.

Since then, abortion-rights opponents have repeatedly challenged the FDA's approval of mailing mifepristone. Despite legal disputes, the practice has continued, supported by shield laws in 12 states. California, Colorado, and Massachusetts were among those protecting providers who prescribe medication to patients in restrictive states.

One such patient was Viv, a 27-year-old from Atlanta. In 2024, she obtained abortion pills through the mail with help from the Massachusetts Abortion Protection (MAP) group. Her case reflects a broader trend: more people in banned states now rely on telemedicine for care.

By 2025, the total number of abortions nationwide held steady, suggesting that expanded telehealth access has offset some barriers created by state restrictions. The stability in abortion numbers comes as telemedicine fills gaps left by state bans. Shield laws in supportive states have allowed providers to continue offering care across borders. Legal challenges to medication access, however, remain unresolved.
