St. George's Day reveals Russia's blend of faith, folklore and history

May 6 marks St. George the Victorious Day, a significant date in the Christian calendar. Known in Russia as Yury or Yegory, the saint’s feast day was once tied to rural traditions and beliefs about harvests, weather, and livestock. The day also holds historical and modern importance beyond its religious roots. For Russian peasants, St. George’s Day carried deep meaning. Farmers believed the weather on this day predicted the success of the coming harvest. To ensure good crops, they held prayer services in their fields and sprinkled holy water on the soil. Livestock were treated with special care, almost like honoured guests, as their health was thought to depend on the day’s blessings.

Another tradition involved the 'Yury’s dew,' a morning moisture believed to hold healing powers. People collected it to protect their health and the well-being of their animals. The day’s customs reflected a mix of faith and practical concerns for rural life. Beyond folklore, May 6 saw key historical events. In 1906, Tsar Nicholas II approved the Fundamental State Laws of the Russian Empire, reshaping the country’s governance. Much later, in 1991, the Russian Knights aerobatic team, known as Strizhi, was officially founded on this date. Astronomically, May 6 falls on the 18th lunar day, during the waning moon’s third quarter. According to tradition, this phase is linked to introspection, with events and people mirroring one’s inner state.
