Siddu and Shankara: The Super-Nutritious Jackfruit Varieties Redefining Indian Farming

Two premium jackfruit varieties, Siddu and Shankara, have been identified for their exceptional nutritional value and market appeal. Researchers at ICAR-IIHR conducted extensive surveys in Southern Karnataka, narrowing down 128 samples to 42 distinct types before selecting these standout cultivars. Jackfruit has long been a staple in rural Indian diets, prized for its sweet flakes and resilience. To rediscover its potential, ICAR-IIHR evaluated numerous varieties across Karnataka. Their focus settled on Siddu and Shankara, chosen for their vibrant colour, texture, and rich nutrient profiles.

Siddu jackfruit stands out with its deep coppery-red flakes and compact size, averaging 2.44 kg per fruit. Each contains 25 to 30 bulbs, and a single tree can produce up to 450 fruits yearly, yielding around 1,098 kg. Nutritionally, it packs 4.43 mg of carotenoids, 1.12 mg of lycopene, 6.48 mg of vitamin C, and 31.76 mg of phenolics per 100 g.

Shankara, meanwhile, yields larger fruits weighing between 2 to 5 kg, with roughly 60 sweet, crisp flakes. Its nutritional content surpasses many other varieties, offering 5.83 mg of carotenoids and 2.26 mg of lycopene per 100 g. Both types are now seen as high-potential crops for commercial growth.

To support farmers, ICAR-IIHR introduced a revenue-sharing model for sapling sales. Under this system, 75% of proceeds go directly to growers, while 25% funds ongoing research. The selection of Siddu and Shankara jackfruit varieties opens new opportunities for farmers and health-conscious consumers. Their striking appearance, high yields, and superior nutrition make them strong candidates for wider cultivation and market success. The revenue-sharing initiative further ensures that local growers benefit directly from their adoption.
