Senate Stalls as Kennedy's CDC Testimony Remains Unscheduled After Two Years

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy invited Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to testify before the Senate Health Committee in September 2022. The hearing, however, has yet to take place, with Cassidy stating no date has been set. Cassidy's support was crucial in securing Kennedy's appointment, despite earlier concerns over his stance on vaccines.

Since then, Cassidy has led 18 hearings, many focusing on issues aligned with former President Trump's policies. Meanwhile, Democrats have criticised the prolonged delay in Kennedy's appearance before the committee.

Cassidy extended the invitation shortly after the removal of CDC Director Susan Monarez from her position. At the time, Kennedy assured the senator he would not alter the CDC's official stance denying links between vaccines and autism. Yet, by November 2022, the agency's website was rewritten to suggest possible connections, contradicting his earlier promise.

In June 2023, Kennedy dismissed all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). He replaced them with his own appointees, further reshaping vaccine policy oversight. Despite these changes, Kennedy had pledged to meet regularly with Cassidy and appear before the health committee every three months if requested.

Other Senate committees have held oversight hearings with Cabinet secretaries since early 2023. Cassidy, however, has not scheduled Kennedy's testimony, leaving Democrats frustrated over the lack of accountability. The senator's role in Kennedy's confirmation—despite reservations about his vaccine scepticism—remains a point of contention.

The delay in Kennedy's testimony continues, with no firm date announced. Cassidy's committee has held multiple hearings, but Kennedy's absence leaves questions unanswered. Democrats maintain pressure for the hearing to proceed, while Kennedy's policy shifts at the CDC remain under scrutiny.
