Seminar Explores Women’s Lives in East and West Germany After Reunification

A two-day seminar titled 'Women in East and West Germany: A Comparative Perspective' will take place at Point Alpha Academy in Geisa on February 5-6. The seminar will be led by Daniela Theurer and Jan Ludwig Antoni. It features key lectures, including Dr. Christopher Neumeier’s talk on 'Women in East and West: Gender Roles, Female Lifeworlds, and Self-Perception – An Overview' and Dr. Jessica Bock’s presentation on 'Women in Germany Today'. Both sessions will explore how women’s identities and living conditions have evolved since reunification. A storytelling café will bring together women from two generations to share personal accounts of life in East and West Germany. The event will also tackle current issues such as the gender pay gap and the impact of the #MeToo movement, framing them within the historical context of the two German states. Registration is now open, with fees set at €10 for attendance only, €20 for a shared double room, and €35 for a single room. Interested participants can sign up by contacting Susanne Bott at [email protected] or calling +49 36967 / 596422. The seminar will close with a guided tour of the Point Alpha Memorial, offering further historical context to the discussions. The event provides a platform for comparing women’s experiences in East and West Germany while addressing ongoing societal challenges. By combining academic lectures, personal stories, and a visit to a key historical site, the seminar aims to deepen understanding of gender roles and identity in post-reunification Germany.
