Seal Pup With Rare Deformity Finds Forever Home After Rescue
A seal pup with a rare facial deformity has found a permanent home after being rescued in March. The animal, admitted to the Tulen Rehabilitation Center on the 16th of the month, faced severe challenges due to its condition. Despite initial concerns, staff decided against euthanasia and instead secured lifelong care for the young seal.
The pup arrived at the centre with a crooked nose, damaged cheek, and lips that prevented it from fully closing its mouth. Specialists also discovered a large amount of sand lodged inside, suggesting possible trauma. Its only remaining nostril had already widened, likely to compensate for the loss of the other.
Veterinary guidelines usually recommend euthanasia in such cases, as survival in the wild is nearly impossible. However, the centre's team chose to give the animal a chance, avoiding extreme measures while monitoring its progress. By March 2026, a crowdfunding campaign had raised over €50,000 to support its long-term needs. Partnerships with the German Oceanographic Museum and Sealife Centers provided additional veterinary expertise. A sponsorship programme was also established, with monthly donations covering ongoing costs for food, housing, and medical care. These efforts ensured the pup would receive specialised attention for life.
The seal pup's future is now secure, thanks to public support and dedicated care programmes. It will remain under professional supervision, unable to return to the wild but guaranteed a stable environment. The centre's decision to pursue lifelong care has set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
