Scabies outbreak surges 19% in Krasnoyarsk Region in 2024

Scabies cases have risen sharply in Krasnoyarsk Region this year. Official figures show a 19.3% increase in infections during the first ten months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. A total of 98 people have now been diagnosed with the condition across the region. The parasitic infection spreads through direct skin contact or by sharing contaminated items like bedding and clothing. Once infested, mites burrow under the skin, causing severe itching—particularly at night. Visible signs include nodular rashes, blisters, and faint grayish lines where the mites have tunnelled.

Nearly half of all cases were recorded in Krasnoyarsk city. Other affected areas include Yeniseysk, Kansk, Achinsk, Divnogorsk, Nazarovo, and Lesosibirsk. Children have been especially vulnerable, with cases jumping from 17 in 2023 to 30 in 2024. While adults rarely develop symptoms on the face or scalp, these areas can also be affected in younger patients. To prevent further spread, health authorities advise regular bathing and washing clothes and bedding in hot water. Ironing fabrics after washing is also recommended to kill any lingering mites.

The rise in scabies infections highlights the need for better hygiene practices in shared living spaces. With nearly 100 cases reported so far, officials continue to monitor the situation closely. Preventative measures remain the most effective way to curb transmission.
