Work of Center for Rare Diseases Receives Funding - Saxony-Anhalt Secures €1M Funding for Rare Disease Network Over Four Years

Saxony-Anhalt has announced plans to fund the Central German Network for Rare Diseases with around €250,000 each year for the next four years. The network, which focuses on rare skin conditions, has been supporting patients and families since its launch in 2013 under the coordination of Magdeburg University Hospital.

Rare diseases affect a small portion of the population, with the European Union defining them as conditions impacting no more than five in 10,000 people. Of the 30,000 known diseases globally, between 5,000 and 8,000 fall into this category. In Saxony-Anhalt alone, roughly 100,000 individuals are living with a confirmed or suspected rare disease, many of which involve skin conditions.

The Central German Network for Rare Diseases collaborates with key medical institutions to improve care. Partners include Halle University Hospital and Dessau Municipal Hospital, where efforts focus on better diagnostics, treatment options, and research. As a central contact point, the network helps patients and families navigate the challenges of rare conditions. Since its establishment in 2013, the initiative has grown into a vital resource. The new funding will ensure its continued operation and expansion over the next four years.

The annual funding of €250,000 will help sustain the network’s work in supporting those with rare skin diseases. With partnerships across major hospitals in the region, the initiative aims to enhance medical care and research for affected individuals in Saxony-Anhalt.
