Saxony-Anhalt funds pandemic-proof dementia care home with €4M

The state of Saxony-Anhalt is funding a new evangelical nursing home in Bismark with around four million euros from its corona special fund. The rebuilt Haus der Sinne will replace an older facility and focus on residents with severe dementia. Planners have incorporated lessons from the pandemic into its design to improve safety and comfort.

The new building will be a single-storey, fully accessible structure with an octagonal inner courtyard. It will house 20 residents suffering from severe or very severe dementia. Generous common areas, large windows, and naturally ventilated bathrooms aim to create a bright, hygienic environment.

The layout includes a circular hallway that can function as a one-way route during health crises. Visitor areas are separated from resident zones and can serve as an airlock if needed. The design also reflects the home's mission: to provide a sense of belonging on earth while embodying care inspired by faith. Unlike other projects, this facility is not linked to broader federal emergency funds for care housing. Instead, the funding comes directly from Saxony-Anhalt's corona relief budget, earmarked specifically for this rebuild.

Construction will introduce modern safety features shaped by pandemic experiences. The home's octagonal design and separation of visitor spaces address infection control without sacrificing comfort. Once complete, it will offer specialised care for dementia patients in a purpose-built setting.
