Saxony-Anhalt faces surge in domestic violence as support networks expand

Domestic violence against women in Saxony-Anhalt has risen sharply, with police recording 8,391 cases in 2024. This marks a 5.8% increase from the previous year. The issue is now gaining wider attention as the global movement One Billion Rising calls for action across the region.

The state has responded by expanding its support network for survivors. A core system of 19 women's shelters, 11 outpatient counselling centres, and a mobile team of psychologists now provides specialised help. Funding has also grown significantly, with €7.78 million allocated for 2026—an increase of €3.8 million since 2021.

Prevention efforts are intensifying too. The statewide campaign Stop! Violence Against Women targets the general public, encouraging men to act as allies. Petra Grimm-Benne, Minister for Equality, has urged widespread participation in One Billion Rising to challenge violence against women and girls.

While Saxony-Anhalt strengthens its services, neighbouring Rheinland-Pfalz operates a similar network. There, 19 women's shelters, 18 intervention centres, and 14 hotlines work in coordination. However, nationwide figures for Germany remain unavailable, leaving gaps in the full picture of domestic violence trends.

The rise in reported cases highlights the ongoing challenge of domestic violence in Saxony-Anhalt. With expanded funding, prevention campaigns, and a growing support network, the state aims to better protect survivors. Officials continue to push for broader public engagement in addressing the issue.
