Samsung's AI-Powered Smart Ward Revolutionizes Patient Care in Seoul

Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, has launched an advanced smart ward powered by artificial intelligence. The new facility uses cutting-edge technology to monitor patients’ health and improve their hospital experience. The ward is equipped with multiple AI-driven systems for patient care. A bed embedded with sensors tracks breathing rate, pulse, and sleep quality in real time. Meanwhile, a wearable device continuously measures blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels.

Patients can control their environment without leaving bed. Voice commands adjust room settings, while facial recognition automatically opens doors for those with limited mobility. A tablet lets them review test results, consult doctors, call nurses, and choose meals.

The bathroom also features smart technology. Radar sensors detect falls and monitor pulse, ensuring extra safety. An AI robot, powered by OpenAI’s GPT model, provides emotional support to patients during their stay.

Currently, the ward focuses on sending biometric data and room conditions directly to medical staff. The long-term aim is to develop it into an agentic AI space that assesses patient conditions independently using real-time information. The new smart ward at Samsung Medical Center combines AI, sensors, and automation to enhance patient monitoring and comfort. By integrating real-time health data with interactive features, the system aims to streamline care while reducing the need for manual checks. Further development will expand its ability to analyse and respond to patient needs autonomously.
